Revelation 2:1-7: “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven gold lampstands: I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place….unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ‘To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.â€
How is our church doing? What is the message of Jesus to our church? When we evaluate our church, we say it is doing well in some areas, average in others, and poorly in some things. While evaluation has value, it means little unless actions are taken where needed.
First, we should evaluate ourselves and make improvements where needed. We need to ask ourselves, “What are my responsibilities and where am I in my Christian walk Might Jesus praise some of my actions but come down hard on my failings? As much as Jesus loves us, He has high expectations for those who follow Him.
Revelation 2:4 says, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.â€Â He goes on to call us to repent and correct.
I ask these questions of myself and you: “How is my love life?  Has my love cooled toward my Savior? Do I worship Him and follow His commandments out of “habit†or out of genuine love? Do I do what is right but complain as I do it?â€
MY JESUS, I LOVE THEE, I KNOW THOU ART MINE,Â
FOR THEE ALL THE FOLLIES OF SIN I RESIGN
MY GRACIOUS REDEEMER, MY SAVIOR ART THOU,
IF EVER I LOVED THEE, MY JESUS, ‘TIS NOW.              William L. Featherstone
