Jeremiah 2:8 “The priests said not, ‘Where is the LORD?’ and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit” This is a good warning to us;  Even the ‘religious’ men (priests, pastors and prophets) were not walking the right way.  How can they lead people under their care?  Make sure we are listening to ‘religious’ men who know the Lord and teach the truths of His Word.  Some of them sound so good and can really tickle our ears with good things we want to hear.  However, we can very easily listen to and walk ‘after things that do not profit’.  Things that are not good for us.  Things that have an appeal to the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.  This can cause our downfall.  The world has so much false stuff out there to tantalize us to walk after things that do not profit us.  Things that will draw us away from the Lord.  Many a Christian has fallen aside by getting off the path.  Thank God, there is forgiveness and restoration to all who have been in this situation.  The mercies of God are so abundant.  He is so willing to bring us back to walk after things that do profit.  Let’s seek things that glorify Him and further His kingdom.  There is a hymn titled “The Mercies of God” that speaks of His abundant mercy and how we could never number them.  Let us walk after things that do profit for His glory and our good.
