And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)
Here again we see the words, “one accord”. Their hearts were bound together in like mind and heart. Their hearts were ready to receive the Holy Spirit. These were people from different backgrounds. You had wealthy and poor, elegant and rough, young and old, etc. How could these people be in one room without arguments or comments being made? They had something stronger than the world binding them together. They had Jesus Christ at the center of their love and desires.
In today’s modern church I have not seen as many people with, “one accord”. Unfortunately I have seen people creating strife between believers because they are trying to fulfill their own desires. (James 4:1-3) We all have heard stories of people arguing and leaving a church because of the color of carpet or drapes. I wonder if we did what the early church did, would our business meetings look different in the modern church? If we all prayed together, then talked, could we have a disagreement while remaining together in one accord? Â
There are not always arguments between believers that hinder the work of the Holy Spirit. In the United States we want to pursue our dreams. We all have heard the American dream. We may have even tasted the American dream. The American Dream tells us we should be able to have a nice home with nice cars and nice things. The problem with this is we have to work so hard to get this. Then when we get some of these nice things, we work harder to get more. Â
Many times in today’s church we have people pursuing a dream instead of pursuing Jesus. A lot of the time the dream does not line up with scripture. They are not in one accord because they are not there to be. Even when they are at church, their minds may be on what they have to do that day. They rely on the church staff and volunteers to do the work of the church. When what should really be happening is all of the church members should be doing the work of the church. Â
We should all be in one accord if we want to see the Holy Spirit work. Can you imagine what the church would look like today of we relied on the Spirit instead of our own desires? I imagine that church would be doing some amazing things. Instead of looking at numbers and money in the church today, let us ask what has the Church done for the Lord today?Â
Examine your heart today have you been pursuing your own desires instead of Jesus? Â
Have you been in one accord with your brothers and sisters in Christ or, have you been complaining about them or arguing with them?
