“The Short Definition of Idolatry”

“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.  Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” I John 5:20-21

What does idolatry look like today?  We do not see people bowing down to carved images on a Sunday morning.  So if we are not bowing down to carved images, can we still be guilty of idolatry today?  I believe we struggle with idolatry everyday.  If you were to ask me, “what is idolatry”,  I would tell you, “It is anything you place above God”.  Which there are a lot of things we place before God.  Most of the time it is our selfish desires.  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard Christians say, “ I deserve this or I am entitled to_________”.

Our idols may not be little carved animals today, but we do still fill our lives with many idols.  Idolatry can also be another religion which may not have carved idols like Islam.  Another idol I see some Christians struggle with is people.  I have seen Christians give me stats on a sports star or movie star but cannot tell me about Jesus.  It amazes me at how many times people will work crazy hours to pay for things like cars, houses, boats, clothes and a way of life without any thought to what they have sacrificed.  If you think about or place more trust in any of these above mentioned things more than God, get your priorities right.  God does not tolerate idolatry and He can take it all away in the blink of an eye.
