Jeremiah 42:3 “That the Lord your God may show us the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.”  This is situation ‘desperate’.  The land has been conquered and the people killed.  There is a remnant left.  The captains and the people left from the least to the greatest came to Jeremiah with this request.  Pray to God that He will show us the way to walk and what to do.  We are desperate and promise to obey the voice of God whether it is pleasing or displeasing.  After 10 days Jeremiah comes to them with the answer from God.  They were to remain in the land and rebuild.  Now they had planned to go down to Egypt to get away from the enemy.  Chapter 43 says, “..all the proud men spoke,…”You speak falsely!  The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to dwell there.’”  Desperate to make a promise they did not intend to keep.  People have made all kinds of promises if only God would get them out of this situation.  We cry, “Help me!  Help me!”  But we want the answer to be pleasing to us.  We want to tell God how to do it.  We tell Him our plans and ask Him to approve it and bless it.  Let’s mean it when we pray and ask God to show us how to walk and what to do.  Again, Amy Carmichael says, “If I hold on to choices of any kind, just because they are my choice; if I give any room to my private likes and dislikes, then I know nothing of Calvary love.”
