Can you imagine?  There is a young Jewish teenager from a Godly family who is engaged to be married.  She is looking forward to a predictable future of a husband, family, and friends serving God in their little village of Nazareth in Galilee.  Suddenly the angel, Gabriel, appears and “rocks her world” with the announcement that she is going to become pregnant now before the wedding! The angel’s appearance must have been shocking enough, but his message was infinitely more troubling.  Her first response was a question. (Wouldn’t ours have been, too?) She asked, “How can this be, seeing I know not a man?” She only knew one way to have a baby and she knew that she and Joseph were not intimate; she knew she was a virgin.  Then Gabriel explained, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon you and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.”

Mary’s immediate response was truly amazing!  She didn’t say…”But what will my parents-and Joseph- say?  How will I cope with the gossip?”  She didn’t consider first the ramifications of the news as it affected her personally.  Would you call her an unusual teenager?  I would.  Her first response was, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”  In other words, Thy will be done, whatever the consequences!  What FAITH!  And she would need that unwavering confidence in the days and years to come.  No wonder Gabriel had greeted her, “Hail thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.”

I hope you caught that-among women.  She was a flesh and blood human girl whom God had chosen for a “once-in-eternity” assignment. She inspires admiration and honor but would certainly shun the misplaced worship of today. She believed, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.”

How about you?  If you have believed and received Jesus as your personal Savior, then He has a totally unique and personal mission designed especially for you.  Will you allow Him to complete that purpose by yielding in faith and saying as Mary did (from your heart), “Be it unto me according to Your Word” ?
