Has Satan lied to you? One of his favorite lies is: “You’re a good person and do many good deeds for others. You are just as good as those people who go to church. You don’t need to go to church or trust in Christ as your savior to go to heaven.â€
It is true that there are many good people in the world who do a lot of good things for others. That just makes them good people, not Christians. It is difficult to get these good people to realize their need for Christ, especially when they see people who call themselves Christian not following Christ’s teachings. Standing in a garage does not make someone a car, any more than sitting in church makes someone a Christian. Thankfully, we are not judged by what someone else does or doesn’t do, but by our own actions.
Romans 3:20 tells us ‘Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.â€Â Romans 3:10 points out that “There is no one righteous, not even one.â€Â Christ came to fulfill the old covenant of the Law by giving us a new covenant of grace and redemption through His death, burial and resurrection. However, in order to be covered under this new covenant, one must accept Christ’s free gift of salvation. This involves repenting of one’s sins and turning one’s life over to Christ and allowing Him to be one’s Master.Â
Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah wrote: “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.â€Â (Isaiah 64:6) Simply put, we just cannot do enough good deeds to be clean in God’s sight. Being a Christian means one has a personal relationship with Christ.  Christians strive to do right because they love Christ and want to obey Him. We need the blood Christ shed on Calvary’s cross to wash away our sins and, through His righteousness, we can become worthy of eternal life in heaven with Him.Â
