Growing up in Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

1 Peter 2:2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

Ephesians 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

I have been born again and am now a new creature. This is what the Word says and I believed it, or did I? I didn’t always feel like a new creature, and didn’t always act like a new creature, at least I didn’t at the beginning of my new life, and still don’t, but am getting better.

Like a new born baby with no knowledge of where he is at, or what is going on, new followers of Christ are thrown in to their new creature life. One big difference is that new parents know not to feed their baby T Bone steaks, bone and all. I heard sermons, Sunday school lessons, participated in bible studies, fellow shipped with fellow believers, while at the same time reading, and then studying the bible on my own. I received milk and solid food, along with a little spoiled food now and then. As I look back there doesn’t seem to be any organization to it, just a mishmash of biblical truth sent my way. Thank God a lot of it stuck in my finite mind; which allowed me to sort it all out and make sense out of it as the years went along. God gave me understanding of what I needed as I needed it, and was ready for it. I was blessed by God in the fact several people sought me out’ and came along side me to help me in my walk with Jesus. I hate to say it but I didn’t see much of that in the churches I’ve been a member of since my re commitment to Christ. Other influences that slowed down my growth were my pride, selfishness, self-deceit, and resistance to humility toward God. Thank the Lord I am getting better and am looking forward to that day when the Word tells me, I will be perfect, with Jesus.

1 Peter 5:10  After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.
