I was sitting in a window seat looking out across infinite miles of unbroken sea. The swells in the ocean caused even this big ship to rock slightly like being in a rocking chair. What a wonderful place to be. No distractions, just the waves glistening in the sunlight and moving unhindered toward where the blue sea met the sky.
It had been a hectic few days getting ready for our 50th wedding anniversary cruise but now I could relax in my window seat. I said good morning to Jesus and began my daily devotions.
A loud public announcement of the next fun activity on board, a steady stream of conversations as people walked by and then the greatest distraction of all……..a window washer outside my window! MY window!! Of all the hundreds of windows on this ship why MY window now??
I opened my Bible to Ephesians 6:10-11.â€Put on the full armor of God so you can take a stand against the devil’s schemes.â€
So now fully clothed in the armor of God I willingly left the view from my window to find a quiet place to spend some quality time with my Lord. My favorite seat would still be there later. How fortunate I am to live in the lap of luxury for five days, I thought.
But after a couple of days the armor held me safe but it did not stop me from seeing all the excesses around me. Looking at the length of the dinner buffet, I was struck by the abundance of food. There were more choices than I could possibly eat even if I took only a little taste of each. Watching each person move along the buffet loading with their platter (yes, a platter!) I couldn’t stop from thinking of the millions of starving children around the world. Walking through the shops, I saw women buying gold necklaces, diamond rings and jewelry with other precious stones. It was mostly the men stocking up on costly bottles of liquor and cartons of cigarettes and cigars; Women spending hundreds of dollars on facials, massages, nails and hair. The casinos open day and night with the sound of slot machines spilling out into the corridors. Nearly two crew members per person pampering each person outlandishly. This is a world undreamed of by a majority of souls living on the earth.
This is not where I normally live. I live in a comfortable ‘bubble’ of a senior citizen park, a Bible teaching church surrounded by people who live their lives according to the doctrines of Christianity.
Why am I here? This is not my world!
But after returning home, I realized what a blessing it was that I was able to see what that other world is like and to appreciate MY world safe and secure in my salvation and the promise of eternal life with Jesus. I thank the Holy Spirit for opening my eyes and heart to this lesson He has taught me.
1 John 5: 4………for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
