“And they came to Him and awoke Him,
saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ Then
He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of
the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm.â€
Luke 8:24
Â
Many times in life we find the waters around us to be so turbulent and we don’t really know why. So we go to Jesus and ask Him to please calm the storm – or calm the storm in me! Often we find there is an underlying reason; we are out of sorts, or a person has really ruffled our feathers. Then is when we have to search our hearts to find the real reason for the upheaval in our spirit.
What brings the storm in the first place? Control is an idol, and so is self. So we see that as we lose control, and self is not on the throne, we are very unhappy and the storm begins to rage in and around us. God has promised that when we look to Him, and focus on who He is, we will find His peace in the midst of the storm.
So prayer is the answer to the storm that is raging within. The Holy Spirit will make it very clear if our hearts and ears are open to that still small voice that speaks to our conscience. In most instances, we are not happy with what we hear. It is said that truth hurts. But if we repent, then Jesus forgives us and stills the storm; then our attitude returns to loving Jesus and all those around us.
We are very weak vessels in our fallen nature, but as our dependence is in God alone, we get safely through the storm and He again is on the throne of our hearts and His peace abides within us. This is His assurance:
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.â€
