“Be Humble”

I Peter 5:5-6 “….All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:10 ‘Humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up’

The dictionary says humility is “not proud or haughty”.  All those famous people ought to be humble.  They are always in the limelight.  It’s as if they were saying, “Here I am, look at me.”  And so our criticism goes toward all the “in front” people.  But our verse says, “all”.  The Bible tells ALL of us to clothe ourselves with humility.  Notice when conversations begin, we always talk about ourselves.  We want people to know what we have done and are doing.

Proverbs 16:18 warns us that “pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”  If we were clothed with humility, it would not matter what was said to us or about us.  It is so easy to forget God is in charge.  We ask for His help and then we take the credit.

It all comes down to a simple question.  Who gets lifted up?  Who gets the credit?  If we got it, Jesus did not.  Someone tells us we did a fine job.   We thank them and lift our hearts to God and give Him the praise.  “I can do nothing without Him,” says Jesus in John 15.  Our accomplishments are His grace in us and through us.  He enables us, He blesses us, He uses us for His glory.  Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His wonderful works, for all His blessings every day.  For victories He gives.  For guidance He gives to make the right decisions.

Bottom line:  It is all about HIM.

                        Once it was my working, His it hence shall be;

                        Once I tried to use Him, now He uses me;

                        Once the power I wanted, now the Mighty One;

                        Once for self I labored, now for Him alone.
