According to the Apostle Paul, the Bible not only teaches us what to rightly believe and how to rightly behave, but it also trains us for “good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It teaches us spiritual maturity and fits us for God’s service.

It is the mature Christian, who lives in conformity to God’s Word, who is fit for God’s service. As the Old Testament priests had to prepare for ministry by cleansing themselves with water from the laver of the tabernacle, today’s priests (Christians) must prepare themselves for ministry by washing themselves with water from the Word—the Bible (James 1:22-25; Ephesians 5:26).
