Forty-seven translators were appointed to the work of the King James translation of the Bible. They were instructed to use the Bishops Bible, the English authorized version at the time, for the basis of their translation. I wonder how many present-day proponents of “King James Onlyism” are aware of the fact that the King James translators were instructed to rely heavily upon another translation of the Bible, a translation by Anglican bishops who were opposed to both Puritanism and the Protestant Reformation?
