Before leaving this important subject of the Spirit’s illumination, let’s consider how it is not only the way for us to rightly interpret the Bible, but also how the Bible serves as the way for us to safeguard ourselves against being deceived by people falsely claiming to have received the illumination of the Spirit.

How can we know when someone is attempting to put words in God’s mouth; that is, falsely claiming to be speaking words the Spirit has spoken to them? The answer is the Bible, which, according to the ancient Prophet Isaiah, serves as the spiritual sifter through which everyone’s words should be sifted (Isaiah 8:20). If they do not agree with the Bible—the Word of God—then the words of others should be discarded as false and erroneous.
