THE GREAT I AM

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’  Then what shall I tell them?”  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”  God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’  This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” Exodus 3:13-15

I was regretting the past

And fearing the future…

Suddenly my Lord was speaking:

“MY NAME IS I AM”.  He paused.

I waited.  He continued.

WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE PAST

WITH ITS MISTAKES AND REGRETS

IT IS HARD.  I AM NOT THERE.

MY NAME IS NOT I WAS.

WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE FUTURE

WITH ITS PROBLEMS AND FEARS

IT IS HARD.  I AM NOT THERE.

MY NAME IS NOT I WILL BE.

WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE MOMENT

IT IS NOT HARD.

I AM HERE.

MY NAME IS I AM.

Of course, we know God is able to be anywhere He chooses to be—in the past, in the future, and in the present.  But, He does not want us to live anywhere except “today”. Today is a gift from God.  That is why it is called the present.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.”  Isaiah 43:18

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”  Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.  James 4:13, 14

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:34

Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before:  “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”  Hebrews 4:7

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24
