Our pianist, Phyllis Jones, shares with us today her love of music.
“O GOD, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O GOD, above the heavens; and thy glory above all the earth.” Psalm 108:1-5
Singing to GOD and about GOD has been in my life since I was a child. Most of my friends were with me in our local church. We were part of G.A.’s and the choir for our age. Then, we went on to the adult choir. In our group there were 3 other girls of my age. So, we formed a quartet and sang many times at our church. We did this until our late teen years when marriage or moving to another location stopped our group. My parents moved from our Tampa home to Temple Terrace, when I was 15. We visited the local church there for several years.
One Saturday morning, a man knocked on our door and introduced himself as the new minister of the Baptist Church that would be in Temple Terrace. He was told I played piano and asked if I would play for the new church. My parents thought it would be great. So, at 15 years of age, I became a church musician. I have been blessed to be able to play for all the churches I have attended – 6 churches in all. I have been a choir member in each church and soloist in some. GOD has blessed me!!
(GOD has blessed us with her talent. Praise GOD!!)
