“YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH” Deuteronomy 4:29. God doesn’t love us half-heartedly. His love is unconditional and all-consuming….it never ends. His love never fails. God’s love never falters or ceases, it can’t be measured; God loves us now and eternally.
Can we say that we love God with all of our heart? Is our heart wholly God’s or is our heart divided by our love for the world? In Matthew 6:24, Jesus says: “NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS; FOR EITHER HE WILL HATE THE ONE AND LOVE THE OTHER, OR ELSE HE WILL BE LOYAL TO THE ONE AND DESPISE THE OTHER. YOU CANNOT SERVE GOD AND MAMMON”. Mammon means riches or wealth and refers to “the world”.
The apostle John says this: “DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD OR THE THINGS IN THE WORLD. IF ANYONE LOVES THE WORLD, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IS NOT IN HIM”. I John 2:15. God doesn’t desire us to love Him with a divided heart. He wants our whole heart! In I John 2: 16-17, we learn more: “FOR ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD….THE LUST OF THE FLESH, THE LUST OF THE EYES, AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE….IS NOT OF THE FATHER BUT IS OF THE WORLD. AND THE WORLD IS PASSING AWAY, AND THE LUST OF IT; BUT HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD ABIDES FOREVER”.
The biggest choice that we will ever make is that of accepting Jesus and loving God with our whole heart or choosing to love the world, which ultimately leads to death. A divided heart is not an option. We simply cannot love the world and God….it is a one/or the other choice. And, it is a forever decision. Once we have Jesus in our heart, there is no reneging….no going back….no changing our mind. It is a life and death decision. We choose Jesus and life or the world and death. It seems to me that it is an easy choice.
In the 5th verse of the hymn, TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE, by Frances R. Havergal, it is said this way:
TAKE MY LOVE; MY GOD, I POUR AT THY FEET ITS TREASURE STORE. TAKE MYSELF AND I WILL BE
EVER, ONLY, ALL FOR THEE; EVER ONLY ALL FOR THEE.
Is your heart divided or is it wholly God’s?
