“THEY WALKED IN THEIR OWN COUNSELS”

Psalm 81:12 “So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lusts and they walked in their own counsels.”  This Psalm starts out by singing aloud and making a joyful noise unto God.  He tells them to blow the trumpets, play the timbrel and the harp.  There was to be rejoicing for all God did for them in bringing them from Egypt, lifting their burdens and delivering them from trouble.  Verse 11 is such a sad verse, “But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.”  God says, “What else could I do but give them up to their own counsel.”  We know where that led.  All the trouble Israel got into, all the enemies that surrounded them and wars they had to fight.  Was not this because they turned their back on God and walked in their own way.  They could not seem to realize that God’s way is always best.  He sees the whole picture.  He knows the end from the beginning.  Why do we sometimes think we are so wise and go on our merry way into trouble.  They walked in their own counsels and the counsel of their family and friends which led them away from God and His way.  How much do we miss of God’s blessing because we listen to our own reason or the suggestions of others instead of running to God and singing aloud for all His blessings He has given us.  I Thessalonians tells us to “pray without ceasing”.  Get God’s advice.  Follow His ways.  May we not walk in our own counsels but harken unto God and walk in His ways.
