Victory over Sin

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And

this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith.”

1 John 5:4

How can this be possible, as the Scriptures tell us there is none without sin? We also know there will always be sin in this fallen world. Another word we have is that all things are possible with God. There is much more to “all things are possible with God.” It is by faith to believe! It is His power given through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us that generates great faith to believe that all things are possible with God.“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6.)

One must have complete faith in the working of the Holy Spirit before victory over sin can be accomplished, for it is not of our ability or strength but HIS alone. So it is by faith and our relinquishment of control that the Holy Spirit has the freedom to work within us to resist the temptation to sin.

What is the greatest cause to bring about our desire to sin? The lust of the flesh. In 1 John 2:16 we read “For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.” Our world is filled with alluring things that test our strength and tempt our hunger for “things” – possessions that are of no real consequence or need.

We will find victory over sin only by the power of the Holy Spirit, for He can and is eager to help us abstain. Through the work accomplished by His molding and changing of our hearts, we can learn self-control to resist temptation over the lust of our eyes and the pride of life. Our first challenge is “obedient faith” to a loving Father that wants only the very best for us. We are born of God, and it is this faith that overcomes the world, and the lust thereof!

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 15:57
