“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
So, from where does pride come? Pride is born out of our sinful nature. It came when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, and flesh became king on the throne of our hearts. Mark 7:21-22 says, “ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.”
Those are very potent words and all very true, for until the light of Jesus comes into our hearts we are blind to them and unaware! There is much work that must take place after our conversion, and it takes years for the Holy Spirit to teach and cleanse our hearts of this powerful sin nature that lives within all of us.
PRIDE has a very strong hold on us and is very difficult to overcome. It can only be done so by the power of the Holy Spirit. In a book that I have just consumed, “The Pursuit of God,” I found much knowledge and the following are several statements that are very relative to our subject of pride!
Pride is a heavy burden, the labor of self-love. The heart’s fierce effort to protect itself from every slight, to shield its touchy honor from the bad opinion of friend and enemy, will never let the mind have rest. “You must become as little children,” for little children do not compare; they receive direct enjoyment from what they have without relating it to something else or someone else. Only as they get older and sin begins to stir within their hearts do jealousy and envy appear. Artificiality is one curse that will drop away the moment we kneel at Jesus’ feet and surrender ourselves to His meekness. Jesus says, “Come unto Me and I will give you rest.” The rest He offers is the rest of meekness, the blessed relief that comes when we accept ourselves for what we are and cease to pretend.
The above writings of A.W. Tozer really touched my heart and I felt I should share them with you. I pray they will open our eyes to see the true reality of God’s love, for He LOVES us just as we are and He will endeavor to make the needed changes by His SPIRIT!
“For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the
eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.”
