“But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Prayer is a very vital part of growing an intimate relationship with Jesus. Through prayer, we come to understand what the love of Jesus is all about. Without love, it is impossible to forgive. Remember, “love covers a multitude of sins,” and this is very true. When we really love someone, we can forgive from our heart.
This leads us to “forgiveness is a must.” What does our Scripture tell us? Unless we forgive, our Father will not forgive our sin. That is a powerful verse and should bring fear into our hearts. Where would we be without God’s forgiveness? What an awesome thought! This leaves us with a great responsibility to our brother. The above Scripture tells us that unless we forgive, neither will the Father forgive us.
There is another aspect that follows our unforgiving – answered prayer will not come until we have forgiven others of any offenses against us, or any offenses we have done to others. Answered prayer comes by and through a cleansed heart, as Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:24, “Leave your gift at the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” When this is done, we have the following assurance from our heavenly Father:
“Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven
that one, it is for your sakes in the presence of Christ; lest satan should outwit us.”
