“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” (Romans 1.16-17 ESV)

The Gospel is not just a story or words in a book.  It is real and powerful.  Look for the graves of Mohammed, Buddha and any other “great” leader of a religion and you will eventually find it.  However, Jesus rose from the dead, not leaving behind bones or a rotting corpse.

The power of that resurrection is the power of salvation to all who believe unto salvation.  Verse 16 is clear about the power of the Gospel.

Verse 17 gives us the rallying cry of the Reformation, the cry of Martin Luther whom God used greatly to bring out a remnant from the corrupt Roman church. “The righteous (just) shall live by faith.”

God is not impotent, but all-powerful, and He demonstrates His infinite power by bringing fallen men into right standing with Him.  This He did by the death of Jesus on the cross and the resurrection three days later.

The Gospel is powerful- we do not need to be scholars, slick talking or even quick witted. His word is powerful. His Holy Spirit empowers believers to use His word for the salvation of those who receive it. The challenge: share God’s word today and let Him demonstrate His power through it.
