Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for His friends.
A short time into our weekly group study Wayne Allen invited me to a Seminar in Omaha, Nebraska that was being offered by a non Christian organization named The Navigators, Tom Bussard is the Eastern Iowa representative for them, Â the one who recruited Faye and I for the 2 year bible study. Omaha is about 6 hours straight west of Davenport. This meeting gave me the opportunity to witness male Christian fellowship in action. The Christian leaders who spoke were open, transparent, humble, and honest about their own walk with Jesus. I did not recognize this at the time, but as time went on I appreciated this group of men more and more.
The ride over and back was 12 hours, Wayne made sure that I was in the back Seat with Tom Bussard. Tom and I hit it off from the start and talked all the way to Omaha. On the way back I again was in the back seat with Tom. Traveling back to Davenport Tom asked if I would like to try a bible study with him. He said we could try for a while and see where it goes, and could stop any time I wanted to. Our weekly time together lasted about four years. I didn’t know at the time was being discipled, in fact it was some time later when I was discipleing some body else that I learned what that meant.
Our meetings were always like 2 friends or brothers meeting. We got into the word and enjoyed each others company. We talked about every thing going on in and around our lives, spiritual, sports, fishing, golf (although Tom didn’t play), We met in churches, restaurants, homes, parks, county park cabin, week end fishing trip. etc. Over time I discovered the same transparency in Tom as I did with the other Navigator leaders. Only after Tom invited me to attend a Saturday morning meeting with him and several men did I discover, Tom was doing the same thing with them as me. Tom met people all over the place, he is like a roaming Pastor. Jesus is the best friend any one could have but next to Him, Faye and my family, Tom is one of those at the top of the list. I learned much from Tom just studying bible and just being around him. There have been several others over the years that mentored me in the same way, Thank God for them all, He had to send a lot of people into my life to help straighten me out. Church, Sunday School, and small mgroups are great for their contribution to my life, and I wouldn’t want to give any of them up, but a close Christian mentor, is number 1 for me.Â
Proverbs 27:9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad, So a man’s counsel is sweet to his friend.
