2Corinthians 9:6-9 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;
When Faye and I decided to join Grace Evangelical Free Church, we were asked if we would attend a four week new members class to help us with doctrine and member responsibility. We eagerly attended and enjoyed the fellowship and what we learned I never imagined it possible I would lead a class like it in about 20 years, God knew but I didn’t. One of the topics taught was giving, the verses above were used to give us a good idea of the attitude God wanted and the benefits of cheerful Christian giving. When I first became a believer as a teenager I don’t remember any thing being said about tithing or any other systematic giving. When the offering bowl came around, I would just throw a few bucks in it, if I had a few extra dollars.
Pastor Jim Anderson using the verses above explained very well how a true believer should want to give back to the Lord for His work, and that we would be blessed by doing so. A guideline in the OT uses a 10 percent tithe plus more when called and able to do so. When you are living financially week to week it is hard to understand where this money would come from. After all there were house, car, utilities, groceries, other expenses, plus a little fun now and then. We understood and wanted to give back, especially because we love the Lord and wanted to participate. Pastor suggested a small amount like 3-4 percent. Then if we didn’t miss it, try 5-6 percent, and up as we felt able.
Faye and I had heard others in our small group testify how they had begun to give this very way, and at each step they did not miss the money ,and could not explain why they didn’t. We committed to the same strategy and started with a small percentage then went up from there. Today we continue to give the budgeted amount plus are able to give to other Christian charities on occasion. Guess what? we don’t miss it either, and can’t explain why.
