“Be thankful”

Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

It is not Thanksgiving, but we need to be thankful.  When we pray, we do it with thanksgiving no matter how God answers.  Don’t you just love it when answers to prayer are just what we asked for.  It is easy to be thankful.  The problem with this verse is we are to be careful, or be anxious, for nothing.  Does that work for us?  Are there not many things to be anxious about that come into our lives?  The good part is that we learn to pray with thanksgiving.  With thanks in everything we make our requests known.

The book of Psalms is filled with thanksgiving to the Lord.  Psalm 100:  “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving…”   Psalm 105:  “O give thanks unto the LORD…”   Psalm 18:49:  “Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD…”  Psalm 30:12:  “…O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.”  Psalm 105:1:  “O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon His name…”  Psalm 106:47:  “…to give thanks unto thy holy name…”  Psalm 107:1:  “O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good…”    On and on we could go with verses that tell us to give thanks unto the Lord for so many things.  Thanks for all He has done for us and given to us.  Thanks that He takes care of us every day.  Thanks that He loves us everyone.

A pastor’s wife in Pennsylvania wrote a song based on this verse in Philippians.

In everything give thanks, in everything give thanks

This is the will of God concerning you

When tempted to complain, to murmur or despair

Just look to Him who said, ‘Cast on me all your care’

In everything give thanks, in everything give thanks

This is the will of God concerning you.
