John 15:11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
Psalms 16:11 “Thou wilt show me the path of life; in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
Philippians is the book of joy and rejoicing. We can have joy in spite of our circumstances. Philippians 1:21 says to live is Christ and to die is gain. Our circumstances do not need to rule us because the end result is to be with Christ, which is gain.
We can have joy in spite of people. Philippians 2:3 tells us to let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves. We are not in competition with other Christians. We do not need to be envious of their work. We have joy because of what God is doing in their lives and our lives.
We can have joy in spite of things. Philippians 3:19-20 declares those who mind earthly things will find their destiny to be destruction but our citizenship is in heaven. It is God’s joy in us that fills us with joy unspeakable. Things do not bring joy.
We can have joy in spite of worry. Again, Philippians 4:6-7 warns us to be anxious about nothing. Just commit it in prayer with thanksgiving and God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds.
A children’s chorus: J is for Jesus for He has first place.
O is for others you meet face to face.
Y is for you. Put yourself last and spell JOY
