Colossians 3:14: “But above all these things put on love which is the bond of perfection.”
Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
Sometimes, amazing things happen that we don’t even notice. But, Jesus notices even the small things. In Mark 12:41-44, He watches as the wealthy put large amounts in the offering while a widow gives a very little coin. Jesus states that her gift amounts to more than all the gifts given out of abundance. She gave out of her poverty. “ She put in all that she had, her whole livelihood”.
Do we notice and appreciate the giving and serving of people in our church? So many things occur and happen so smoothly that we enjoy them and fail to think of the behind the scene effort by God’s people.
We are stirred by a sermon delivered by our pastor without thinking of the hours of study, planning, and praying that he put into the sermon.
We enjoy the choir, or the quartet, or Exaltation, or a solo without thinking of the efforts that the participants gave to the performance. We are moved to worship but fail to appreciate the time and talents that enabled us to worship.
The Wednesday evening supper is a pleasure that “just happens” because of the planning, shopping, and all afternoon cooking of Nancy and her crew. No cooking or cleaning up for most of the rest of us.
Ah, but none of these things, “just happened”. They were gifts of God by His people who put on love, the bond of perfection. Their words and deeds are done in the name of our Lord Jesus.
Sunday School teachers, Department heads, Trustees, Pastors and others who visit the ill and shut-ins, volunteers who answer the church phone, staff who prepare bulletins, Prayer guides, etc., Don and his audio/video team, Earline who keeps our facility clean, Barbara and her Hospitality Committee… I wonder who I missed? However, Jesus does not miss even the “small things” that are really, truly, important that our New Hope people are doing.
What just happened? God’s people, showing their love for each other by their actions…that is what is happening! Jesus told us He did not come to be served, but to serve…..we are to do likewise!
