My High School yearbook had a tradition of selecting the IDEAL girl and IDEAL boy. Traits were selected from the classmates to describe the “perfect” graduate.
The Apostle Paul says in I Corinthians 11:1: “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” Paul wanted them to become more like Jesus, even as he was striving to do.
Perhaps, we can seek to imitate the admirable traits of the New Hope Baptist Church staff. We will consider them as having qualities to make the Ideal follower of Jesus.
We might seek to know the Scripture as Pastor Donnie does. We would need to read the Bible regularly, not just skimming it, but studying it. We may never achieve the depth of knowledge, and recall that He has with his Nothing But The Bible, but think of the improvement we could make!
We could seek to have the enthusiasm of Pastor Steve as he leads us in music and worship. He blesses us with the choir, Exaltation, and Men of Hope. We can smile, make a joyful noise and encourage him even if we lack his talent.
Let’s be part of a warm, welcoming church. Barbara Emery is often the first to welcome newcomers and help them feel at home. We can each be a help to her efforts even if we aren’t quite as “bubbly” as she.
Marie James bustles around helping our Pastors and staff and all of us who ask for her help. We could certainly model our “helpfulness” after her. (You’ll need to be cheerful about it, too.)
You may not notice it because it is the way it ought to be…our church is neat and orderly. Earline Masters is much of the reason. She does it so quietly and efficiently. Let’s help by not leaving a “mess” and do whatever God calls us to do, quietly and humbly; giving God the glory.
To really know about our Associate Pastors, Phil and John, you need to attend prayer meeting. They minister on our behalf to the sick and hurting in our congregation. They assist in every way they are needed. May we seek to emulate them in caring for others in Jesus’ name.
As Paul asked the early Christians to model themselves after him, we can model ourselves after our Pastors and Staff. Ultimately, we need to follow Jesus and let Him make us like Him.
MORE LIKE THE MASTER I WOULD EVER BE,
MORE OF HIS MEEKNESS, MORE HUMILITY
MORE ZEAL TO LABOR, MORE COURAGE TO BE TRUE
MORE CONSECRATION FOR WORK HE BIDS ME DO
TAKE THOU MY HEART, I WOULD BE THINE ALONE
TAKE THOU MY HEART, AND MAKE IT ALL THINE OWN
PURGE ME FROM SIN, O LORD, I NOW IMPLORE
WASH ME AND KEEP ME. THINE FOREVERMORE.
