You know, I don’t think there is a more vivid present day illustration of the differences between the kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God than a comparison of two American celebrations. Consider the following list:
- Darkness Light
- Taking (trick or treat) Giving (gifts to others)
- Death (tombstones, skeletons) Life (Jesus’ birth)
- Evil Good
- Demons Angels
- Fear Trust
- Ugliness (costumes) Beauty (trees, lights, etc.)
- Satan Jesus
- Revelry Worship
- Discordant sounds Music and praise to God
- Fearsome beasts Little lambs
Can you think of other contrasts?
On Halloween night, our boys were allowed to dress up as bums (basically adding a little more grime to their dirty play clothes!) and race around to the row homes of Philadelphia and collect an astounding amount of goodies and then make themselves sick for the next few days! They didn’t care about the dark origins or real meaning of the celebration – just the candy!
I’m afraid this is how much of our world views the Christmas Holidays. They are most interested in the economic opportunities from Black Friday through the January sales. They like to decorate, give gifts, and party, but don’t care much about the real meaning – just ‘grab the goodies and run back to their real world.
What would Jesus say?
“Come out from among them and be ye
separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what
is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be
a Father unto you and you shall be my sons
And daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
II Cor. 6:17-18
We need to keep it clear in our own minds, as well as our outward testimony, to which kingdom we belong.
