Book of James – Day 18

James 4:13-17 (KJV)   “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

As a Christian can I make plans without consulting the master? Do we have the right to plan the outcome of events in our lives? These questions and more are answered in these verses.

The temptation here is self sufficiency planning without God, relying on our selves instead of relying on God. The world teaches us that we must plan and plan the outcome of everything that we do. Yet as an individual we cannot plan the outcome of our lives. Each person’s life is controlled by God whether they believe in God or not.

Self sufficiency in reality is the denial of the existence of god. If we profess a nonbelief and say that I can do all things without God are we not taking the place of God? This is an arrogance that god will not tolerate for long.  This is what makes self sufficiency a sin.

So as Christian we need to look for leadership from our heavenly father. Never looking to ourselves for guidance but be willing to willing to listen to the still soft voice of God for leadership.
