1 Corinthians 3:16 “Surely you know you are God’s temple and that God lives within you.”(NIV)
Our foundation in Christ must be strong enough to stand up against temptation, the idols of the world, the pitfalls, the false prophets and persecution. Our possession of the Holy Spirit (the third person of the triune God) living within us as believers is the distinguishing mark of a Christian. He lives in us giving us wisdom, understanding of God’s Word and strength to deal with trouble in our lives. The Holy Spirit gives us eternal life; helps us pray, sets us free from sin, teaches us truth, gives us assurance of God’s love and gives each of us a gift with which we may serve God.
In John 15:26 Jesus promises “…the Helper will come…the Spirit who reveals the truth about God.” In Galatians 3:14 we read “Christ died on the cross so the blessing which God promised might be given to the gentiles by means of Jesus Christ so that through faith we might receive the Spirit promised by God.” And in Galatians 4:6 “To show you are his children, God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts.” (NIV)
“I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever…the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because they don’t know him, but you know him because he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14,17,18,20 (NIV)
“All these promises are made to us so we aim to purify ourselves from everything that makes body or soul unclean and be completely holy by living in awe of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans not to live as our human nature tells us, but to live as the Spirit tells us because God’s Spirit lives in us. The Spirit comes to help us pray and pleads with God on our behalf and in accordance to his will. Those who obey their human nature cannot please God but must be led by the Holy Spirit.
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Because I live, you also will live.” John 14:18-19 (NIV)
