When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.(Acts 1:6-7)
Many times I have heard people put down the disciples for wanting Jesus to set up His kingdom. In these verses, we see the disciples asking Jesus once again, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” The disciples wanted Jesus to be king over their land.
Have you ever stopped to think what you would have asked Jesus? Put yourself in the disciples shoes. These disciples had just seen Jesus die on the cross, put into a grave, and then rise from the dead. Jesus had defeated death, what else could stop Him? I know if I were there I would be thinking that the strongest army in the world would be nothing with Jesus by my side. I believe what the disciples were asking was not too far from what we want to see. How many times have we said, “Lord Jesus hurry back!” Really, we are asking Jesus something similar to what the disciples were, only we use different words. What if the Lord told you that He would not return for another 100 years? Would you be discouraged? Would you be more lazy when it came to telling others about Christ?
I feel the real question to ask is, “Why did Jesus not give them a timeline?” Jesus told the disciples it was not for them to know. It was the Father who knows and has the authority. Can you imagine what the disciples would have done if Jesus had told them it would be 2000 plus years? Would they have walked away disheartened? Would they have been angry at Him?
Sometimes the best answer to our prayers or questions is: “The Father knows and it is His business.” If He would tell us the answer, we wouldn’t be satisfied? I am glad the Lord does not answer every prayer I submit. If He did, I would have never learned many of the lessons He has taught me.
Have you ever had God not to answer a prayer only to see why He did not answer it later? Share with others how God has revealed to you His knowledge and authority.
