“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” I John 5:20-21
John finishes his first letter with “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” For some reason we do not hear many sermons preached on idolatry these days. Is it because this subject is one many of us struggle with? Or is it because this teaching conflicts with the American dream? We see how the Lord views idolatry in the Old Testament and how serious he was when he punished the nation of Israel for it. Has God’s view on idolatry changed? Definitely not, we can see this if we read the whole Bible. The Old Testament and the New Testament are one. They work together to show us the Gospel and the great God we serve.
I believe idolatry is a major widespread sin in the American Church. I believe it is the root of many struggles in the personal lives and in the body of believers. When we are committing the sin of idolatry we tend to be very selfish. Have you noticed any selfish people in the modern church? No? Look at the amount of drug use, divorces, bankruptcies, sexual immorality, and fights within the walls of the church. Over the next couple of days we will look at Idolatry and how to keep ourselves from it.
