“And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27(ESV)
Many times in counseling I have run across people who are living more for themselves or others than Jesus. I have seen some people trying to make themselves happy by filling their lives with fun through the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle. These people eventually hit a wall of reality at some point where they realize their lives have been wasted on frivolous things. I have seen these people either turn their lives around or they just go deeper into depression. Then there are those who indulge themselves into something positive but when it ends their lives are crushed. How many teenagers think they will be ball players when they get older? They devote their lives to running and training for the college days. Then in one split second of stepping wrong they mess up a knee. Their life as they know it just screeched to a stop. Depression sets in and now they must find something else to do.
What breaks my heart more than the ones above are the people that try to make everyone else happy. They live their lives for others. These people are the ones that are hardest for me to help. It seems I can never dig deep into their heart because they are hiding something. They do not want me to think of them as bad or ungodly. I cannot tell you how many people I have talked to with this complex who concentrate on the rules of God rather than the grace and love of God. They cannot tell me why they should follow the rules. They just know that they are supposed to follow the rules.
I pray today you follow God because you love him. Yes there are laws but remember the law was to lead us to the grace and love of God. Learn to love God with all your heart soul and mind. Devote yourself to him more than anything on this earth. He will not leave you depressed and searching.
