Three Positions in Christ

We know that Jesus Christ fulfills three positions:  the positions of prophet, priest and king.  He was God’s prophet during His earthly ministry.  (Acts 3:22-24)  He is now our High Priest.  (Hebrews 8:1)  Jesus will be King of all the earth when He returns.  (Revelations 11:15; 19:11-16)  These same three positions apply to Christians.

PROPHET:  The common understanding of a prophet is one who foretells the future as God has revealed it.  A prophet can also be a preacher of God’s Word which all Christians are called to do.  Christians aren’t apt to think of themselves as preachers when they tell and explain the Word of God to people but they are.  In this sense Christians have the same position Jesus had – preacher.

PRIEST:  Jesus was a priest and is now our High Priest.  “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.”  Hebrews 3:1. Jesus Christ as High Priest sits on heaven’s majestic throne.  (Hebrews 8:1)  Christians are priests on earth.  “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”  I Peter 2:5. Christians are priests who offer spiritual gifts to God.

KING:  Jesus Christ is destined to be king which the Jews thought He would be when He was with them.  He will assume the role as king of the world when He returns to earth and sets up His kingdom in Jerusalem.  “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever.”  Revelations 11:15

It will be an especially joyous time for Christians when Jesus Christ assumes His rightful kingship because we will  reign with Him.  “…Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his father…”  Revelations 1:5-6   “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”  Revelations 20:6

There we are, dear Christian.  Like Jesus Christ we have three ordained positions to perform: prophet, priest and king.  We are prophets when we share the Word of God with others who need to hear it.  We are priests in that we offer up spiritual gifts to God in living out the faith.  We WILL be kings (co-regents) reigning with Jesus Christ in His kingdom.  Difficult to imagine isn’t it?

Are we faithful prophets of God telling others about the Word , both the written Word and the living Word?  Do we offer up spiritual sacrifices daily to God in living the faith?  Are we believing and looking forward to the time when we will be kings reigning over the world with Christ?

DEAR LORD, HELP US TO FAITHFULLY CARRY OUT THE THREE POSITIONS YOU HAVE GIVEN US IN CHRIST.
