New International Version (NIV)
16 There are six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him. 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
As our ‘daily devotions’ continues for September, my thought processes reached back to Proverbs where once again we find a listing of a variety of ‘outside’ behavioral instincts which are sourced on the ‘inside’ of a fallen, depraved unrepentant and unregenerate. This conduct may even be observed from the life of an unrepentant disobedient believer.
The writer to the Hebrew believers indicted them for their failure to grow and develop as they should have, given the time from the point of their conversion. They should have been more progressed in spiritual maturity, able to discern between the good and the evil. Jeremiah says that we should remove the ‘precious from the vile’ and that is a constant challenge to each who would desire and strive at being a ‘mouth’ for God to be trusted, to be listened to.
Let your heart listen to and honestly appraise the personal relevance to what you are hearing. From the ‘inside’ there is adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulation, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, envying, murder, drunkenness, raveling, unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, strife, deceit, malignity, whisperers, backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, unmerciful, haughty eyes, lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, false witness who pours out lies, a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
