Inside/Outside #16

The acts of the flesh are obvious….depraved mind…..wickedness…evil

The pathway and theme for the devotions this month has largely a negative tone and message but one which is exceedingly important. Important, because to know what we are on the inside gives understanding and challenge to what we must seek to become on the outside. The acts of the flesh are descriptive of the naturally born instincts that are latently and patently present inside and are dormant, but given certain circumstances and conditions can rise to the outside. Today our issues have to do with a depraved mind, wickedness and evil. These are appropriate as I put this together on this 26th day of August. Our TV news and newspapers are filled with the very wicked and evil deeds which have been perpetrated and accomplished in the massacre of some 76 persons both in the bombing in Oslo and the nearby Youth Camp. All of these horrendous, horrific and horrible deeds flowed out of the mind thought of a very depraved person. And add to the fact that our New York Times attributed the deeds to the act of a Christian person. In no way at all was this deranged individual related to Jesus Christ This is the effort of a God hating thought pattern that wishes to denigrate and be disparaging of all which relates to Christ, who alone is able to give strength and power to rise above depravity, wickedness and evil doing.

As to a definition, a depraved mind belongs to any person who is morally corrupt. In Theological terms, depravity has to do with the innate corruption of human nature brought to all persons by the introduction of original sin spoken about in Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.” and also in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else an is desperately wicked…”

As to a definition, wickedness is the product produced by the actions of the person who is depraved and morally corrupt and is totally absent of any redeeming qualities and scruples.

As to a definition, evil is that conduct on the outside which boils from the inside and commits acts which are profoundly immoral and corrupting. Thankfully, the evil and wickedness produced by a mind that is totally depraved is not beyond the reach of redemption.

3 John 1:11 – Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
