To the best of my count, we have 60 negative and positive behavioral characteristics to examine both with definition and scripture. This is a plan, to do that which I have not done and perhaps that is true for you as well. Several days ago I brought to your attention the fact that a ‘man’s ways are inside of him before they come to the outside of him’ The Bible speaks in Galatians 5: 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality…impurity….debauchery
The desires of the flesh are in opposition to the desires of the Spirit and as long as there is not presence of the Spirit in the life one should not be surprised or even disappointed to personally witness the ‘outside’ expression of the fleshly desires and impulses. I call to you attention the closing words of Romans1:32 “And although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”
Immorality, in general is a failure to do that for which one is responsible. As this relates to ‘sexual’ immorality it obviously draws one’s attention to the acts in thought, word and deed. This damaging behavior is not the result of the ‘spirit be willing but the flesh is weak’ but much more like the ‘spirit being unwilling and the flesh being very strong’.
Impurity by definition is found in the absence of purity. Wikipedia says: Impurities can be destructive when they obstruct the working nature of the material. We are the material and from the beginning Satan obstructed the working nature of that which the Creator pronounced as being ‘very good’. So complete was his obstruction that now, among other indictments…All have turned aside…they have become useless…there is none who does good….their throat is an open grave…with their tongues they keep deceiving…the poison of asps is under their lips…whose mouth if full of cursing and bitterness…their feet are swift to shed blood…destruction and misery are in their paths…the path of peace they have not known…there is no fear of God before their eyes.
Debauchery by definition suggests a deviation of departure from one’s duty, allegiance, virtue and obligation. A life lived in ‘debauchery’ is a life without a sense of duty, allegiance, virtue and obligation. That surely speaks of the lives lived out by so many within the framework of the Church.
